Prescription types
- Private Prescriptions
- Drug Payment Scheme; subject to a monthly threshold of 80 euro, usually availed of by those in receipt of expensive medicines
- Medical Card prescriptions; for those in possession of a medical card, prescriptions are charged at 1.50 euro per item up to 70 years of age and 1.00 euro per item over 70 years old, subject to monthly maximum of 15 and 10 euro respectively
- Long Term Illness; certain illnesses such as Diabetes are designated Long Term Illness and medicines to treat them are provided by the HSE free of charge
- Hi-Tech medicines scheme; certain essential medicines are too expensive and are provided by the HSE directly to pharmacies
